From a single coach in Kandy to Sri Lanka's largest private swim school network — 70+ certified coaches, 12 pools, 2,100+ swimmers learning every week.
Stingrays began at the Trinity College Swimming Pool in Kandy under our founder, Avantha Dias Weerasinha — a UK-trained swim coach (BSc Sports Coaching, University of East London; ASA Level 1 & 2 Swim Teaching) who returned home with a clear mission: teach swimming the way it should be taught.
Most swim classes around the country were casual. Drop-in sessions, large mixed groups, no clear progression — kids splashed for an hour and went home no closer to actually being able to swim. Avantha and his co-founder Dinethri Dias Weerasinha knew it could be done better, so they built it: structured Level 1–4 curriculum, certified coaches, 6:1 ratios, real progress tracking.
Twelve years on, that's the network you see today.
Twelve pools across ten cities and counting — four in Kandy (Trinity College Pool, Stingrays Leisure Pool, St. Anthony's Katugastota, Capital Regency); five across Greater Colombo (Pepiliyana, Nugegoda, Maharagama, Colombo 10, Colombo 08); plus Matale, Kurunegala, and Kegalle.
Every pool runs the same Stingrays Level 1–4 curriculum. The same 6:1 coach-to-swimmer ratio. The same certified instructors trained through the Stingrays internal programme.
Avantha Dias Weerasinha — Founder, Head Coach. Avantha is a UK-trained swim coach (BSc Sports Coaching, University of East London; ASA Level 1 & 2; National Pool Lifeguard Qualification). Former Sri Lanka national swimmer. Previously coached a Kandy school's competitive swim programme — taking them to #2 at the National Age Group Championships in under a year, ending a 13-year podium drought.
Dinethri Dias Weerasinha — Co-founder. Dinethri leads operations, parent communication, and the curriculum standardisation that keeps every Stingrays pool on the same page. The reason an experience at Pepiliyana feels identical to one at Trinity College Pool is largely her work.
Every Sri Lankan child deserves to know how to swim. Not just to be safe around water — though that matters — but to find a sport, a discipline, a confidence-builder that can carry them for life. Adults too: it's never too late to start.
We're a private business, but the mission is bigger than the business. Sri Lanka should be a country where swimming is taught well, taught widely, and taught by professionals who care.
