The Reality

Sri Lankans deserve a swim school that actually teaches. That's what we built.

and it's fixable →

In India, children aged 1–14 are the most at-risk age group for drowning, yet swimming is rarely taught at scale in schools. Most kids grow up around water — apartment pools, rivers, beaches, festivals — without ever learning how to be safe in it.

Stingrays was built to fix that. Certified Stingrays coaches, a structured Level 1–4 curriculum, safety-first 6:1 ratios, and 12 pools across Sri Lanka. Whether your child is three months old or you're an adult learning at 50, we'll meet you where you are and take you forward.

The Stingrays Standard

Built over a decade. Refined every week.

Avantha and Dinethri have spent over a decade refining every part of the system — coach recruitment, certification, curriculum, progress tracking, parent communication. What you get at any of our 12 pools is the same standard, end to end.

01

Stingrays-trained, caring coaches

Every instructor is trained through our Level 1–4 pathway in technique, safety, and child-first communication.

02

6:1 student-to-coach ratio

Our safety-first ratio is non-negotiable. Every swimmer is seen, corrected, and cheered on — every single lesson.

03

International curriculum

A structured Learn-to-Swim progression. Age-specific, outcome-driven, with clear stage badges so every child knows what they're working toward.

04

Pools where you live

We teach at apartment, school, and community pools — so your child swims 5 minutes from home, not across the city.

We've been with Stingrays since my son was four. Three years on, he's swimming proper freestyle and butterfly. The structure makes all the difference.

What I love is the consistency. Every coach teaches the same way. Even when our regular coach is away, my daughter's progress doesn't stop.

I started learning at 38, terrified of the deep end. Six months later I'm swimming laps. The patience of the coaches is unmatched.

Our Method

We didn't copy-paste a swim school. We built one.

Twelve years of teaching swimming across Sri Lanka has shaped how we work. Here's what makes the Stingrays system land for every child — and why parents stay with us through Stage 1, 2, 3, 4 and beyond.

  • Standardized Learn-to-Swim curriculum

Age-specific, culturally adaptable, progression-driven. Every coach teaches the same milestones.

  • International coach training pathway

Stingrays Level 1–4 builds careers, not just instructors. Every coach keeps getting better.

  • Tech-powered progress tracking

Parents see every attendance, every milestone, every badge earned — not just a monthly report.

  • Partnerships with schools, apartments, & communities

We bring lessons to existing pools — so families get quality swim education without a cross-city commute.

Avantha started teaching swimming in London in 2006, while completing his BSc in Sports Coaching at the University of East London. Over seven years at Greenwich Leisure Centres, he trained under the UK's ASA Level 1 and 2 swim teaching standard and earned his National Pool Lifeguard Qualification — the same rigorous framework used in British schools.

After graduating, he spent two years as a Level 3 certified personal trainer in London before returning home with a single idea: what world-class swim teaching looks like in the UK, every child back home deserves too.

He and Dinethri built Stingrays together — from a single pool in Kandy to 2,100+ swimmers learning every week across 10+ cities, a proprietary Level 1–4 coach training pathway, and venue partnerships across apartment communities, schools, and clubs.

We never set out to build the largest swim school. We set out to teach swimming the way it should be taught — small classes, certified coaches, real progress, no shortcuts. Twelve years on, that's the network you see today: 70+ trained instructors, 12 pools, 2,100+ swimmers a week, all from Kandy outwards.

Stingrays operates with venue partners, certified instructors, and a regional coordination team across Sri Lanka — from Kandy to Colombo, Kurunegala to Kegalle.

Questions

Everything a parent asks us first.

Still have a question? Message us on WhatsApp — we reply fast.

Where does Stingrays operate?
We operate across 12 pools in 10+ cities in Sri Lanka. Four pools in Kandy (Trinity College Pool, Stingrays Leisure Pool, St. Anthony's Katugastota, Capital Regency), five across Greater Colombo (Pepiliyana, Nugegoda, Maharagama, Colombo 10, Colombo 08), plus Matale, Kurunegala, and Kegalle. See the full locations list for schedules and details.
What is the student-to-coach ratio?
Every class runs at a 6:1 student-to-coach ratio. This is our safety-first standard. It means Stingrays-trained coaches can watch every child closely, correct technique in real time, and keep the energy fun without ever losing control of the water.
What age can my child start lessons?
Group classes for most venues start at age 6. For younger kids (3+ at most venues, 7 months at Trinity College Pool), we offer dedicated parent-toddler programmes. Adults of any age and ability are welcome at most venues — many parents start alongside their children.
What ages do you teach?
According to the National Crime Records Bureau, drowning caused 38,503 deaths in India in 2022 — 9.1% of all accidental deaths. Children aged 1–14 are the highest-risk group, and experts estimate the true number may be much higher in rural areas. Structured swim education is one of the few proven ways to reduce this risk.
How do I book a class?
Pre-book a booking by tapping the Make a Booking button on this page, emailing info@stingrays.lk, or messaging us on WhatsApp. Class slots are limited per batch because of our 6:1 ratio — popular pools fill fast.
What makes Stingrays different?
Four things: an internationally developed curriculum refined across 10+ cities, Stingrays-trained instructors trained through a Level 1–4 pathway, a non-negotiable 6:1 ratio, and lessons at pools inside your community (apartment, school, club) so families don't have to commute.
Can my apartment or school partner with Stingrays?
Yes. We partner with apartment complexes, schools, clubs, and housing societies to bring structured swim programs to underused pools. Tap Partner With Us and our team will reach out within 2 business days.
